NSW Lotteries says the NSW entry was the only division-one winning entry in Oz Lotto draw 1329. However, the identity of the new multi-millionaire remains a mystery.
The winning entry was not registered to a player's card and NSW Lotteries is urging people to check their tickets immediately.
NSW Lotteries has not yet released where the winning ticket was bought.
Oz Lotto spokesperson Matt Hart said he was eagerly waiting for Australia's newest multi-millionaire to make contact and start the prize-claim process.
"Someone has become an overnight mid-week multi-millionaire but possibly doesn't know it yet," Mr Hart said.
In addition to the $40 million division one winner, there were 632,508 winners across divisions two to seven and they will collectively take more than $14.5 million.
The winning numbers in Oz Lotto's $40 million draw 1329 on Tuesday were 13, 32, 19, 45, 37, 24 ad 15. The supplementary numbers were 23 and 28.
