However, the new $40,000 Hyundai IONIQ sedan will have to be taken to Canberra for servicing and Wagga still lacks a fast charging station to replenish its batteries in under an hour.
Wagga Mayor Greg Conkey unveiled the new car on Monday, which can drive for 280 kilometres on a single charge.
"The running cost is around about $2 per 100 kilometres and that will come down when we put solar cells on the top of the council chambers," he said.
"It's very cheap to run, we will evaluate it and hopefully we will be buying more electric vehicles.
"We want to build a sustainable and resilient community and this is one way to do that."
Environment and city compliance manager Mark Gardiner said the council was "working with the dealerships to ensure that this technology is able to be serviced locally".
"The running costs of the vehicle is 70 per cent cheaper and there are no exhaust fumes," he said.
Mr Gardiner said the council was working with the NRMA to install a faster 'supercharge' point in the city.
