The Steamers took a 33-19 win over Leeton to close the gap on their top four rivals.
They remain in sixth place but are only three points behind third-placed Griffith, who they face next week, with six games remaining before finals.
Coach Paul Musarra thought it was an important win for the side.
"It was a good win," Musarra said.
"The boys played really well and not that I was expecting an easy game but Leeton were a lot stronger than what I thought they were going to be."
Albury had come up short against the top two sides, Ag College and Waratahs, leading into the clash, but Musarra was pleased with how they responded to their 39-10 loss against the premiers.
"I was disappointed with how easily Waratahs beat us so it was good to bounce back," he said.
"The guys pleased much more like how we played against Aggies."
With games against the top two sides in the last fortnight leading into finals, Musarra wants to bank as many points as possible.
It starts with a big clash against the Blacks at Murrayfield.
"It's going to be tough," Musarra said.
"They've got some ability so I think it is going to be a very physical game.
"We're looking forward to it."
Sam Allen had a strong game while Sam Seton and Charlie McIntosh also impressed.
Leeton are seventh, six points behind Albury.
