Shortly after 1am on Sunday, officers attached to the Murray River Police District located a house on fire in North Albury.
The officers were conducting a routine patrol and drove down Kestrel Street where they were confronted with the blaze.
Fire and Rescue NSW services were contacted immediately, and arrived to extinguish the flames.
It is unsure how long the fire took to be controlled or how long it had been alight before the arrival of emergency services.
During the course of the episode the house suffered extensive damage.
Following containment of the fire, officers began to search the remains of the home.
A body was found inside the home, and is yet to be formally identified.
Police will continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and will detail a report for the coroner.
