The 71-year-old will be running in the City2Surf in August, which will mark about his 26th time in the last 38 years.
Mr Edgar entered his first event in 1981 and pushed his son David in a "flimsy" plastic wheeled stroller to celebrate his first birthday.
"It's a wonderful event, there's about 80,000 and just the noise as you approach the drinks station, you can hear the crunch or people running over plastic cups and the echoes are just amazing," he said.
"It does get harder, especially when you have each birthday.
"I just do it; I practice and train and share my running between the Road Runners and Park Run."
Mr Edgar suffered a stroke in 2006, a week before he was to contend in that year's race, and the medical team told him he likely would not have survived if he was not fit.
"I feel so content to know that I can still do it; I don't think I'm any special, I'm just enjoying my passion," he said.
"I hate seeing death notices of people younger than me or in their 70s, missing out on life.
"I urge people, from young kids through to adults, to get some fitness; walk, ride a push bike, swim if you can and you don't have to go out and break any records.
"Get addicted, it's a great addiction," he said.
The City2Surf is a 14 kilometre course that commences in Sydney and ends in Bondi.
His wife, Deb Edgar said running and encouraging others to get involved, is what keeps him going.
"I'm excited for him and I'm glad he's still here," she said.
Mr Edgar is organising the City2Surf coach trip and said there are seats available for non members, for more information contact him on 0411 451 344.
