Yesterday evening, reports of a large smoke sighting resulted in the Forest Hill and Lake Albert rural fire brigades, as well as a Fire and Rescue NSW crew, investigating the incident.
In a social media statement, the Forest Hill RFB said it was a "large column of black smoke in Forest Hill".
"It is generally not a good idea to allow a mattress to fall onto your outdoor fire," the statement reads.
Riverina zone operational officer Bradley Stewart: "A resident was burning domestic waste and shouldn't have been".
The NSW RFS website states that every year, fire services attend to hundred of fires that start due to the careless use of fire.
"In some cases, fires have been lit illegally. Many have escaped, threatening homes, crops and livelihoods," the NSW RFS says.
