Riverina District Police Inspector Peter McLay told The Daily Advertiser that a number of metal and plastic bins outside of shopfronts were damaged by the fires ignited between 11:20pm and 11:50pm.
The underside of an awning outside one of the shops appeared to have suffered heat and smoke damage.
The bins were located between the corner of Fitzmaurice Street and Johnston Street and 110 to 140 Fitzmaurice Street.
"We're looking at sourcing CCTV to identify offenders," Inspector McLay said.
"No charges have been laid as yet."
At this stage police do not believe that the offender or offenders brought along petrol or another type of flammable material to start the fire.
"It looks like they used the materials that were available in the bins," Inspector McLay said.
Fire and Rescue NSW attended the incident.
Wagga City Council removed at least two fire-damaged wood and steel enclosures for public rubbish bins.
A council spokesperson said it would cost $2870 to order and install each replacement enclosure.
