The prestigious schoolboy football competition kicks off for another year on Wednesday with two games, headlined by the clash between the two traditional heavyweights at 7.30pm.

Wagga High School and Mount Austin High School will open the competition at 6pm.

Mater Dei won the Carroll Cup in 2016 and then have lost the past two finals to strong Kildare teams.

Mater Dei coach Nathan Irvine said it has been a changing of the guard at his school.

"We've only got five kids who have played Carroll Cup before," Irvine said.

"We've had a lot of students from year 11 and 12 that have got apprenticeships so this will be the most inexperienced team we've had since I've been involved.

"It will give some opportunities to other who may not have played otherwise and we'll see how they go."

Mater Dei have prepared for this year's Carroll Cup with two trial games against Canberra opponents, Marist Bros and Erindale College.

While they lost both games, Irvin took plenty of positives from the trials.

"If we can continue to improve from both of those trials, we'll give ourselves a chance," he said.

Irvine is hoping for a big game from Mater Dei's leaders.

"Like most teams, our strength is our spine with Nate Mooney at full-forward, Hamish Gilmore at centre-half-forward, he's been going well, Wes Clark in the middle, he's pretty dynamic and Lachie Johnson at centre-half-back," he said.

"Nath, Wes and Lachie are our most experienced players so we need them to stand up in their positions."
