Lash stylist Sommer Deaves wants residents to know the key questions to ask when looking to book an appointment to avoid serious issues.
"We see people come into the studio that have had eyelash extensions put on multiple natural eyelashes so they're not isolated," she said.
"The lash has to be isolated so that it can still grow naturally without the cycle being affected.
"If it can't do that, then the balding can start because the lash follicle has been infected."
Ms Deaves said they commonly see infections because extensions have been put too close to the ski, or even penetrate the skin.
"Another condition that is really common is called blepharitis which happens when they are not told how to look after their lashes properly," she said.
"You have to cleanse every day because you have demodex folliculitis that lives in your lashes and they overproduce if there is too much oil and you get an infestation."
Ms Deaves said the minimum requirement to learn is only 90 minutes, so it is always ideal to ask for a portfolio.
"That doesn't necessarily give people the right information to do the right thing," she said.
"Look at their past work and testimonials. Ask if they are registered with council."
Ms Deaves said while people offering the service don't have to get a skin penetration license, the council still likes to know if you are operating a business.
"Ask the businesses if they are insured and hold an ABN," she said. "Ask if they have a consult or waiver form, if they don't then that is a clear indication that they're not doing everything by the book."
Ms Deaves said there is a common misconception that the longer an eyelash, the better.
"If they're too heavy then it can damage them," she said. "An appointment should never take less than 75 minutes for a full set."
Ms Deaves said as an educational leader in the lash industry and international keynote speaker at eyelash extension conferences, she wants residents to be aware to ensure they are getting the right service.
