A man was stabbed after checking on another driver in what police are labelling a road rage incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet on Wednesday evening, two vehicles were travelling east along Edward Street between Moorong Street and Edward Street.
"One of the vehicles was accelerating harshly and then also braking suddenly in front of other vehicles," he said.
Inspector Spliet said the car then stopped at the end of Edward Street and Docker Street at the traffic lights and was not moving or complying with the traffic lights.
"The driver got out to check on the other driver, I believe to check on his welfare and make sure he was alright and that's when the driver of the first vehicle has produced a knife and stabbed the male before driving off," he said.

"A short time later, police attended an address in Ashmont and arrested a 56-year-old male in relation to that matter.
"He has since been charged with reckless wounding, assault occasioning bodily harm and menacing driving."
Inspector Spliet said the 56-year-old was initially refused bail by police, but will attend court later this month after being granted conditional bail.
"The male was treated at the hospital, he drove himself to Wagga Hospital where he was treated for a stab wound to the arm," he said.
"It was an unprovoked attack from our investigations that we have had at the moment.
"We're after any dashcam footage from Edward Street between 6.30 and 7.00pm on April 24 and also any CCTV footage people have along Edwards Street between Mooring Street and Baylis Street.
Inspector Spliet said there a P-plater travelling east along Edward Street between 6.30 and 6.50pm "who may have been menaced by the other vehicle" and urged the driver and any other witnesses to come forward.
