About 1200 people were in St Saviour's Cathedral in Goulburn at the weekend to see Mark Short installed.
Dr Short, 51, was rector at Turvey Park before spending nine years as Archdeacon of Wagga.
Since 2011 he had been the national director of the Bush Church Aid Society, supporting Anglican ministry in rural and regional Australia.
Dr Short and his wife Monica, who have now moved to Canberra, have two sons, Andrew, 25, and Matthew, 21.
Ms Short is a social work lecturer with Charles Sturt University's Wagga campus.
Before beginning his theological studies, Dr Shortworked as a financial journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald and later joined the public service in Canberra as a graduate economist for the Department of Industrial Relations.
