The Dragons recruit calmly converted Bradon Taylor's late equaliser in the final minute to help pull off a remarkable win.
Southcity had one last chance but it was the Dragons who secured a short kick off attempt to run out 20-18 winners.
Not only did Block star with the boot, but scored an crucial try and saved a couple more as last year's grand finalists were beaten by the wooden spooners at Nixon Park.
The Dragons were held tryless in the first half, and trailed 12-2 at the break, but a barnstorming finish ensured their season started in the best possible way.
Block, new halfback Jarrod Lee and Taylor all crossed for tries in a spectacular display of rugby league from the underdogs.
Captain-coach Sam Elwin was thrilled with the performance.
"It was fantastic," Elwin said.
"Every person I talked to can't believe it.
"It was such a high quality game where they didn't drop many balls and we were the same.
"The completion rates for both sides would probably be in the 90s and a few of the older fellas were saying it was the best game they've seen at Nixon Park in over a decade."
Elwin heaped praise on Block, who has returned to the Dragons after two premierships with Farrer League club Marrar in the past two seasons.
"You always see him up there having a kick and even when we were in the juniors he was renown for his clutch goal kicking, hence why he's always had the nickname Clutch," he said.
"He prevailed with the kick but that wasn't his main highlight.
"He scored the first try, there were two times they made line breaks and he was stopping tries left, right and centre.
"He was exceptional."
Block wasn't the only one who stood out.
Lee created plenty of spark in his first game for the club, Blake Appo and Zach Starr also impressed while stalwarts Matt Hughes and Kris Rands got through plenty of work in the forwards.
Despite causing a big boilover to start the season, Elwin doesn't want to look too far ahead.
"You don't win premierships in round one so we're not getting too far ahead of ourselves," he said.
