Wagga apprentice jockey Josh Richards enjoyed the biggest win of his career as Class Clown ($21.00) provided trainer Chris Heywood with his first Gundagai Cup.
Class Clown missed a start in the Albury Gold Cup last month, and then again last week as the Tullibigeal Picnic Cup was washed out.
A month between runs and a couple of changes in plans ultimately paid off as Class Clown caused a boilover to win the $32,000 XXXX Gold Gundagai Cup (1800m).
Class Clown sat outside odds-on favourite Gasworx and kept on going, racing away to score by one length from Charlie Royale ($15) and Kipe ($61).
Heywood was thrilled to land his first Gundagai Cup.
"It's a cracking race to win, it really is," Heywood said.
"Josh (Richards) rode him perfectly and the horse went super."
Class Clown won the 1600 metre race on Town Plate day at the Wagga carnival last year. The year before, he won the 2000m race on the same day.
Heywood cannot wait for a crack at the Cup with Class Clown.
"It's super. The only race for him over the carnival was the Cup," he said.
"We probably would have struggled to get in but we're in now and the pressure's off.
"It's good for Josh as well. It's a big leg up for him.
"I've got a lot of trust in him and it's good for him to have a ride in the Gold Cup. It will be a good experience for Josh to go around in the Cup."
