Berkrey was handed the captaincy by coach Adam Perry during the week and will also shift into the front row to cover the loss of Matt Henery for the Tigers.
Gundagai started last season with Berkrey at five-eighth before quickly moving him back to lock.
However he expects moving up into the number 10 won't pose as many problems.
"(Six) probably didn't work real well, clearly we started pretty slow last year, but I think I'm a lot more comfortable playing in the middle," Berkrey said.
"Ten and 13 are pretty much exactly the same in our team anyway.
"It is just a number really."
Henery's loss takes some of the size out of the Tigers pack, especially when added to the fact Berkrey is playing lighter again this season.
However they've added Troy Barby into the second row and Cameron Woo is closing in on a return from a serious knee injury last season.
With James Smart handing over the coaching role after a second three-year stint, and then heading off to play in the United States next month, the Tigers were on the hunt for a new captain.
The 26-year-old was honoured to get the nod heading into his third season with the club.
"It's really good," Berkrey said. "I'd say PJ (Smart) would have been our captain but with him leaving halfway through the year.
"I makes me proud to represent Gundagai as it is such a good club."
With plenty of experience in the side Berkrey doesn't expect it will change his game.
Gundagai start their title defence at home to Albury on Sunday.
The Thunder were the last team to beat them, handing out a 48-16 thrashing on the border in the last round of the regular season.
Albury will unveil another halves combination with Robbie Byatt moving to halfback to play alongside Adrian Purtell.
Purtell doesn't believe there is any difference in the two halves roles.
New recruit James Girdler will start at fullback after making a late switch from Group 20 premiers Griffith Waratahs.
There are also a couple of familiar faces back in reserve grade for the Tigers.
Former Weissel Medal winner Brett Eccleston seems to have shaken off another retirement attempt after undergoing facial surgery midway through last season.
Chris Rose is back at the club following a season away and has been named in reserve grade and on the bench for first grade.
