A shallow quake with a magnitude of 2.9 occurred shortly before 9.30am, the Seismology Research Centre reported.
Initial mapping suggested the earthquake happened 50 kilometres north-west of Young, before a location update outlined it was actually two kilometres east of the town, the centre said.
Six official 'felt reports' from people have been made, according to Geoscience Australia, the government agency that operates the country's earthquake notification service.
Social media lit up with other reports, ranging from rumbling and windows rattling to explosion-like noise and homes shaking.
It's not the first quake for the region this year, with Temora and Ariah Park experiencing tremors in February.
According to Geoscience Australia, the severity of shaking experienced during an earthquake depends on a range of factors such as depth, severity, topography and ground conditions.
