Bidgee Theatre Productions is preparing Strictly Ballroom to open in theatre in July this year.
"We chose this because we always want to bring a first to Wagga," said Nichole Rosengren, musical director and producer.
"This was one that hadn't been done before and we went and saw the production in Melbourne last year and decided we loved it.
"We thought it would be something suitable for all ages and the fact it was Australian was another feather in the cap."
Ms Rosengren said the story follows a top male ballroom dancer's journey to win a championship.
"He wants to win and he needs a partner to dance with and it's the ugly duckling story for the girl," she said.
"It's about his ambition, their dancing and how they fall in love."
On Sunday, the full cast had their first main rehearsal together.
"We have spent the last month coaching our dancers in ballroom techniques," Ms Rosengren said.
"We were fortunate to have a lot of trained ballroom dancers for this one.
"It is beautiful to watch."
Ms Rosengren said they are calling it Strictly Ballroom, Strictly Limited as it is only a two-week run.
"Hundreds of hours of preparations go into this," she said.
"We are very excited and there are glitz and glamour all the way with the sensational costumes and an amazing cast and production team.
"All the music is live, there is no pre-recording."
Ms Rosengren said the production company's goal is to produce the best quality theatre, using local performers, off stage crew and technicians and thereby extending them an opportunity to hone their skills and gain valuable experience in the magical world of the theatre.
"We are so excited to show Wagga Strictly Ballroom," she said.
The show will run from July 11 to 20 with matinee and evening sessions available. Purchase tickets at civictheatre.com.au/whatson/strictly-ballroom.
