Residents angry over Wagga's NSW TrainLink's expensive ticket prices at Easter

Train-users travelling in the upcoming weeks are expected to pay 35 per cent more than usual due to the Easter holiday period. 

The NSW TrainLink service offered an online discount on adult fares, which could vary in price during peak, shoulder and off-peak seasons. 

Wagga customers purchasing a one-way ticket to either Melbourne or Sydney could expect to pay $44.39 in the off-peak season, $57.70 in the shoulder period and $79.89 in the peak. 

Diane Sheridan, of Wagga, said the cost of public transport was "appalling" and there should be a consistent rate throughout the year. 

"It is wrong that it is more expensive in certain seasons. If anything, the cost should be cheaper during the more popular travel periods," she said. 

"It is not a cheap bill, but there should be one-fixed rate across the year." 

Ms Sheridan said the state government needs to consider the public when it comes to transport and be more consistent with costs and timetables. 

Natalie Moore, of Wagga, was unaware of seasonal fares and believed NSW TrainLink could do more to inform the community of fluctuating prices. 

However, Miss Moore said the cost of train fares are reasonable. 

"There are many people who plan trips on a budget and they need to know how much they are budgeting for," she said. 

"It comes as a shock when prices are higher than expected and because they have a strict budget they are left stranded." 

A NSW transport spokeswoman said the service has offered seasonally discounted fares during periods of low demand for many years.

The spokeswoman said full fares are only charged during a "very small window" in peak seasons including Easter and Christmas holidays.

During the peak seasons, she said customers could still benefit from a permanent 10 per cent discount for online bookings, with concession fares also available all year round.
