Goulburn proved too strong in a tight final, getting past Brothers in extra time after a late try to former NRL player James Aubusson.
However it was still a bright start to Peter Little's campaign as coach of the Wagga side as to Roy Jewitt's at Young after the Cherrypickers were knocked out in the semi-finals by the eventual winners.
Southcity looked bright on night one but were left to rue a late penalty goal miss as they went down to Darlington Point Coleambally in the quarter-finals.
Temora were also knocked out in the second phase of the competition after two losses from their games.
