Forever Newyork strengthened his case for the $150,000 Country Championships heat with a strong victory at Canterbury.
With Jake Duffy in the saddle, Forever Newyork took out the $50,000 Hyland Race Colours Benchmark 70 Handicap (1250m).
It was Colvin’s first winner in Sydney and his first metropolitan triumph in more than a decade after previous success in Melbourne.
“It was good. I’d had a lot of placings in Sydney and it was starting to really annoy me, getting beat,” Colvin said.
“It was good to get the monkey off the back.”
Colvin could not be happier with Forever Newyork, heading into the big race at Albury on Saturday week.
“It was a nice win," he said.
“When it started raining, I was really worried. It did rain, too. But it was a good result, he hit the line very good.
“I was quietly confident he would run a big race but when the rain came, that had me really worried. It was good to see him run like that and he pulled up terrific, which is the main thing.
“I’m looking forward to a fortnight’s time. We’ll keep him ticking over and have a crack at it."
Meantime, Colvin is putting Tully Toff’s Highway Handicap disappointment on Saturday down to the wet track.
Tully Toff will still head to the Country Championships heat at Albury at this stage.
“He didn’t handle the wet,” he said.
“At the moment, I’m putting it down to the wet track. He did the same thing at Wodonga one day in the wet.
“He’s a big striding horse and never handled the conditions.”
