Sent in to bat, the Bulls recovered from a poor start to make 142 at Wagga Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Lake Albert were 4-25 before Josh Coyte (17) and Nick Skelly (14) started the fightback.
Ryan Jamieson top scored with 34 before the premiers were bowled out in the 69th over.
Tim Cameron was the pick of the bowlers with 5-49 off 33 overs while Dean Terlich picked up four wickets.
The Bulldogs resume at 3-8 but still have James Richards and Todd Henderson still to come in.
Despite that Smeeth is happy with where the Bulls are at.
“There was definitely a bit in the wicket and Cameron bowled really, really well literally all day,” Smeeth said.
“They bowled well, caught well and with a couple of bad shots you don’t get many runs but we know that’s a competitive total.
“They didn’t send any of their good batsmen out in the evening so there’s still some big wickets we have to get but I think we are favourites at the moment.”
It was only Jamieson’s second match back in the top grade following his wedding.
Smeeth thought he made a massive contribution.
“It’s good to get him back on board,” he said.
“He did really good and was unlucky to get out really.”
