Tobermory ($2.30) produced the performance of the day at Wagga, winning the Hutcheon & Pearce Class One & Maiden Plate (1800m) by a whopping 5½ lengths.
The win prompted Smart to reveal plans for the Gundagai and Wagga Cups with the lightly-raced four-year-old.
“I really want to win the Gundagai Cup with him, which would get us into the Wagga Cup,” Smart said.
“We’re well on our way.”
It was Tobermory’s second win from eight starts. Iron Stride ($12.00) battled on for second, with Dante Pierro ($21.00) third.
Meantime, Mathew Cahill produced an outstanding ride to help Wahini Miss ($7.50) to victory in the Australia Day Cup – Benchmark 58 Handicap (2000m).
It was the four-year-old’s maiden victory, at her third start for Mitch Beer.
