Tully Toff won three of his four starts last preparation, prompting Wagga trainer Gary Colvin to target the $150,000 Country Championships qualifier with him.
Tully Toff had a trial at Wagga last week and only went fair so Colvin has decided to start him on Monday in a bid to bring him along ahead of the Championships heat at Albury next month.
“We gave him a trial and it really just looked like he needed another run,” Colvin said.
“We put him out after his last win and gave him 12 days off and he done really well. He’s worked good since the trial so hopefully this run helps pick him up a bit.”
Tully Toff ran sixth in the seven-horse trial that was full of Country Championships hopefuls.
Colvin will start Tully Toff in Monday’s Sims Metal Management Wagga Scamper (1000m), where Mathew Cahill takes the ride.
Colvin then plans to head to Warwick Farm on February 9 to give the four-year-old his final run leading into the Championships.
Colvin’s other Championships contender, Forever Newyork will trial at Wagga on Monday. It will be his third trial in the past two months as Colvin carefully maps out the son of Manhattan Rain’s campaign.
“He had a break too and I just want to tick him over a bit,” he said.
“It’s going to be a hard 1400 so you have got to make sure they’re right.”
Forever Newyork is likely to go to a Friday night Canterbury meeting in February for his last hit-out.
At Wagga on Monday, Superoo will join Tully Toff in the Wagga Scamper.
He resumed with a fourth behind Levee Bank earlier this month and has drawn the inside gate for Jake Duffy.
“Superoo had a lot of time off. He’s always had some hoof problems and we’ve seemed to get it alright,” Colvin said.
“I’m not sure about the 1000 metres with him. He’s probably more suited over 1200. Both of them, he and Tully Toff.
“He’s pretty fresh though and they’ll go like scalded cats. It’s been hard to find the right race for him but hopefully he runs a respectable race.”
Arguably Colvin’s best chance of the day is Supalux in the R H Blake & Co Maiden Plate (1200m).
The three-year-old has been posted deep at both his race starts but has rallied for fifth and third placings.
Unfortunately he has come up with barrier 12 for Monday’s assignment.
“He’s had a couple of runs now, got a bit of experience so hopefully he will give a good show,” he said.
“I want to try and get a decent draw with him so we can teach him something rather than get caught wide all of the time.”
Delta Rose rounds out Colvin’s runners in the Jupiter Motors Maiden Handicap (1000m).
“We gave her a chance to mature a bit more and we’ll see how she goes,” he said.
“She probably wants a bit further.”
