James Simpson, known to most as Jim, is receiving a Public Service Medal for his service to the Lake Albert Brigade.
Mr Simpson joined in in 1953, when he was eight, and is now the longest-serving member of the brigade.
“I have attended many incidents over the years locally and interstate, including the Black Saturday Fires in 2009 and Junee Jail Break Inn Fires in 2006,” he said.
“I remember we worked through the day, got a few hours sleep and then headed back out again.”
Mr Simpson said attending fires could be overwhelming when there was significant property damage or loss of life, but there was always support from the community.
“I remember the fires at Mangoplah where I had two radios and I was coordinating the sectors of that fire,” he said.
“During that fire, there was an ambulance parked next to me and the paramedic continued to bring me cups of coffee.
“He didn’t have to do that, but it aided me to do my job.”
Mr Simpson said his father had been a captain of the brigade previously, so taking on the mantle was a natural progression.
Mr Simpson said he was blown away when he found out he was receiving an award.
“It’s been a privilege and it’s not just me,” he said.
“It’s been amazing to have some great people working by my side and there are plenty of other people out there who deserve the recognition too.
“I will continue to serve in the Lake Albert Brigade for as long as I can.”
