Riverina Police District Superintendent Bob Noble said emergency services were called to a home in Ashmont, just after 10.45am on Sunday morning, following reports of concern for the welfare of a 15-month-old boy.
“Ambulance rendered CPR after the family had also been rendering CPR, but unfortunately the boy was dead on arrival at Wagga Base Hospital,” he said.
“Police have established an investigation.
“It is obviously concerning and we have a grieving family and they are quite understandably distraught and we are working with them to get to the bottom of this matter.”
Media reported that the death was not due to natural causes or SIDS, but Superintendent Noble said this can not be confirmed.
He said there are no findings at this stage, but hopes to see results from the post mortem examination this evening.
“At this stage, it is very inconclusive,” he said.
