The last placed Bulldogs finished day one of the clash at McPherson Oval at 7-211 courtesy of runs from some of their most experienced players.
Captain James Richards (89) and former skipper Todd Henderson (79) put on 166 runs for the third wicket.
The Bulldogs were in early trouble at 2-4 after Ethan Perry (1) and Neil Morton (3) were dismissed before the pair used all their experience to navigate out of trouble.
Wagga City got back into the clash with a string of quick wickets after newcomer Craig Action removed Henderson.
