The Day Street property, only three blocks from the closest fire station, caught alight about 10 minutes after midnight.
It is unclear whether there was anyone in the building at the time, and The Border Mail understands the home owner has not lived there for the past year.
One neighbour believed the fire was suspicious, observing it quickly engulfing the home.
“We were awake and saw a small flame – then it went right across the house,” the neighbour said.
“It was going up higher than the trees.
“It was just fortunate it was cooler and not as windy.”
The small house appeared to be built with pine beams, brick and tin.
Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Stewart Alexander said crews from Henty, Culcairn and Wagga had worked to contain the fire within an hour.
“They had to demolish a front section of it due to risk of collapse,” he said.
“There were some great work from Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters and our RFS colleagues.
“Fortunately there was no injuries and it’s a timely reminder to have working smoke alarms and to always call triple-0.
More police news:
“The cause can be difficult to determine given the level of damage.”
Police were on scene in the early hours of Tuesday and returned to speak with neighbours on Tuesday morning.
Inspector Scott Russell said investigations were continuing.
“The cause of that fire is being determined with our crime scene currently undertaking an examination of that scene,” he said.
“It will be treated as suspicious until we know otherwise.”
