Roslyn Mitchell, owner of Mock Orange Cafe in Lake Albert, decided to allow customers to choose from four campaigns to support, which Ms Mitchell then donates money and time to.
“It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning," she said.
Ms Mitchell originally had chosen four cause – equality, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, indigenous pride and the general Lake Albert community.
“It was so fabulous when marriage equality passed so after we chose to swap it out for a fountain for Lake Albert which is a novel idea,” she said.
“Something to help from a community perspective rather than relying on council, which hasn’t been helpful so far.
“I love seeing the conversations parents have with children over which one to choose.”
Cancer, in particular, is a cause which is close to Ms Mitchell’s heart, having personally fought breast cancer and come out the other side.
“50 per cent of our customers choose to support the cancer fund which covers the cost of meals and drinks for anyone going through chemotherapy,” she said.
“It does mean that my staff has very brave conversations with people who are wearing hats or who are bald to encourage them to take that option up.
“We encourage those who are suffering to come out if they feel up to it because we would love to shout you.”
Ms Mitchell said her vision is to improve communities one cafe at a time.
“To date, 50 per cent for chemo, 19 per cent for the kiosk on the lake, a similar for the fountain on the lake and the remaining goes to the Indigenous Cultural Fund,” she said.
“Over the past years, funds raised would be $9000.”
Ms Mitchell said she would love to thank her customers who have been supporting her.
“We expanded in March and our trade has grown by about 30 per cent,” she said.
