As part of the free school holiday program, the Tolland Community Centre hosted a festive celebration.
Young people, children and their families celebrated with Santa arriving on a firetruck, Inspire Youth Shack providing table tennis, a free BBQ, Xboxes, face painting, popcorn, giant Jenga, a free raffle and a candy cane hunt.
Mission Australia’s tenant participation community Engagement facilitator, Elizabeth Meakin, said the community-led school holiday activities are a great opportunity for young locals to get together.
“These free activities are a great opportunity for children, young people and their families in our community to unwind, have some fun and make some memories at Christmas and during their Summer school holidays,” she said.
“It’s a chance for young people and children to try their hand at new things, make friends and connect them with local groups in the area, as well as inspire ongoing participation in a range of activities.
“Every child and young person deserves this opportunity, regardless of their background or family circumstances.”
The program of free, fun school holiday activities at Tolland Community Centre will run until January 30, 2019.
The school holiday activities are community-led and facilitated by Mission Australia as part of the new social housing Tenant Participation and Community Engagement program which is funded by Family and Community Services.
Ms Meakin said the TPCE program aims to strengthen community ties for people who are isolated in social housing, support tenants organise community groups, link tenants with support services and provide feedback to FACS on potential community improvements.
“We will focus on ensuring all residents have an equal stake and are actively involved in decisions that affect their homes and neighbourhood,” she said..
“So they can play a key part in creating a stronger community.”
