Carevan Wagga was inspired by the efforts of the Albury-based charity of the same name.
The recent donation of a fully-fitted out van by Thomas Bros Group has fast-tracked the initial idea from concept to reality, said Committee chairperson, Angela Flynn.
“The donation of the van has brought the launch date of the project forward dramatically, and while there are still ongoing costs, the van is certainly one of the biggest associated with the project,” she said.
“The lovely idea behind Carevan is that not only are we giving people a nutritious meal, but it will be a sit-down affair complete with tablecloths and proper cutlery to provide dignity and camaraderie for our guests. Initially, we aim to be operating three nights per week, and we are hoping that volunteers will register their interest”.
“They have about 300 volunteers registered in Albury; it’s flexible, people can do it one night a month, so it’s not a big burden, and of course we don’t want to burn people out.”
The team are planning to begin delivering food to the homeless and less fortunate members of the community three nights a week in early 2019.
The Carevan Wagga project is looking to create a sense of identity and belonging for those experiencing hardship or social isolation, many of whom are children and senior citizens, said Ms Flynn.
“Six Wagga Wagga high schools have willingly volunteered to prepare meals, and we have local producers and businesses that have pledged to donate ingredients and food items,” she said.
“If you are a grower, caterer, restaurant or you have a high turn-over of ingredients, please get in touch.
“You can be sure that your stock isn’t going to waste, it is being prepared by local students, delivered by local people, to those community members who will really appreciate it.”
The Carevan team are launching their project at Cork & Fork on Friday, November 30 at the Wagga Civic Centre.
