Six Wagga swimmers took preparations to a whole new level last weekend, making the trek to Canberra over the weekend for the Canberra Christmas Classic at the Australian Institute of Sport Swimming Complex in what coach Gennadiy Labara described as a “good challenge”.
“I don’t think all of them were really prepared but they decided to go and why not, it’s a good challenge for them,” Labara said.
“There’s a few medals there too and some really good times.”
Alethea Levy was a standout on the day, placing first in the under 10 girls 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley along with a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke.
Georgie Stephens, Lillian Holtorf, Natalia Horsley , Bridget Stephens and Allyana Levy also attended the meet with the group collectively recording 16 personal best times.

The strong turnout pleased Labara, who will this week celebrate his one year anniversary since joining Wagga Swim Club.
The Ukrainian says he’s enjoyed his time so far in Wagga and noted a growing support for the sport.
“We’re steadily improving our numbers and club numbers which is good to see, especially with younger swimmers coming along,” Labara said.
“It’s a very good swimming community here and people always held out by driving kids to meets and it’s well supported.”
It’s too early to determine whether Labara has made headway in his earlier pledge to make an Olympic champion but the proof will be in the pudding when his Wagga team dives in at the SNSW Senior State Age Championships next month.
