Mia was born with a congenital femoral deficiency, a condition that caused her hip and femur to be underdeveloped at birth, her mother Leila Bright said.
“She is having a complicated surgery done in America,” she said.
“The easiest way to describe it is her leg will be turned around to face backwards, her foot will face backwards and her ankle will act as a knee joint.
“They will create a somewhat functioning hip joint from what is there and then she will be treated prosthetically.”
Ms Bright said the fundraising has been going for two years officially under the Specialist Medical Resource Foundation and in that time they have reached $300,000.
“I do not have enough thanks to give to Wagga,” she said.
“We don’t have the final figure but we definitely cracked the $300,000 and every little but has been so helpful.”
The family will fly out on December 30 for Mia’s surgery.
“We are nervous but excited. It’s the next chapter in her big adventure,” she said.
Ms Bright’s childhood friend Sam Billington has been one of the main driving forces behind fundraising.
“Our biggest event was our Midwinter Ball,” Ms Billington said.
“So many markets, BBQs, gift-wrapping – we did everything we absolutely could. It has been incredible to realise that Wagga will stick their hand in their pocket and give you their shirt off their back.”
On Saturday, the family hosted a BBQ to say thank you and farewell to Wagga.
