The club returned to the under age division this season but were forced into forfeiting. They don’t want to be in the same position in 2019.
“We want to make sure before we commit that we have enough numbers to reasonably sustain a competitive side throughout the year,” The Rock-Yerong Creek’s Mick Mazzocchi said.
“We’re putting an ad in the paper. We’re two or three boys off what we need which is frustrating because it’s so close but it’s just a matter of finding those to have a sustainable side.”
Mazzocchi said they’ve exhausted The Rock for players and are hoping some Wagga teenagers may be interested in joining.
“It’s Saturday football, it’s a fairly Wagga-based competition in the 17s and we’re going to train in Wagga for the 17s,” he said.
He believes that the club has plenty to offer.
“We think we’ve got some of the best coaches going around at our club. (In addition to senior coach Tom Yates), we’ve got Tim Sullivan, Brad Aiken, David Pieper, Heath Russell. A lot of them have worked with GWS Giants academies and have a lot of experience. We think we can offer the best development they’ll get anywhere in the Riverina, so that’s something else.”
TRYC need to make a decision in coming weeks.
“It's crunch time now. Out of respect for our current players, we need to make a decision because if we can’t field a side we want to give our players a chance to go somewhere else and do a full pre-season,” Mazzocchi said.
“For the sake of the league we really need to get up and going.”
Without TRYC, the Farrer League Under 17.5s will be a five-team competition as Barellan, Coleambally and CSU won’t have a third grade.
