He’s one of 12 drivers invited to be a part of the burnouts exhibition, which will be a feature of the Wagga Motorcycle Sports Club’s efforts to bring the speedway to life for a stadium cross ‘rec ride’ night.
Rushby will take his supercharged 1981 XD Falcon out, 16 years after he smoked them up in his old 1981 XD Falcon at the same venue.
It was a moment captured by The Daily Advertiser and revisited by Rushby when the shot was run in Thursday’s paper.
“That photo I had printed years ago but I lost it when I moved house. Two days ago I got invited out to be part of the burnouts. They’ve only invited 12 so I was pretty excited. Then I came to work and opened the paper and the photo of the old car is in there,” Rushby said.
“I couldn’t believe it! I’ve been looking for that photo for years then it turns up two days after I’m invited back to the speedway.”
Rushby said the coincidence has only added to his excitement about bringing burnouts back to Yarragundry.
“Oh absolutely. I’ve been waiting since 2002 for it to happen again,” he said.
“I’m hoping that it kicks off more regularly and we might be able to start a comp up.”
Rushby said the Pro Burnout show will include some of the best in the business.
“Some of those cars are what they call the masters of the summernats,” he said.
He said the art of the burnout comes down to three things – instant smoke, high rpms and driver control.
As for what makes it so popular:
“I think it’s probably the superchargers – the loud noise, the big revs,” he said.
“It’s just a rumble through the bones. It gets the juices going. That’s how it used to be for me before I had one.”
Saturday’s motocross event begins at 1pm. The Pro Burnouts exhibition is from 6pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.
