Known for her fierce moves, the Wagga native landed the gig of pro-dancer in 2013 after previously having worked as a troupe member.
This season, Burgess was partnered with Bobby Bones the talk show host who is set to become an American Idol in-house mentor.
The pair were awarded the Season 27 Mirrorball trophy on Monday night.
“Six years and 12 partners later... it’s the win I never expected but it’s everything I could’ve dreamed,” Burgess wrote on social media.
"It was always meant to be you. Thank you to every single person who voted, who rallied, who supported and believed in us. We quite literally wouldn’t be here without you.
“@mrbobbybones once I process all these emotions there is a post coming just for you. But for now... simply thank you for everything.”
The couple’s final freestyle dance, to Panic! at the Disco’s The Greatest Show was a hit with the judges, scoring perfect 10s for the first time.
“Bobby, you have not always been the judges’ champion, but 100 per cent, you’ve always been the people's champion and I am going to tell you tonight you’ve become my champion,” judge Len Goodman said.
The pair won over Disney star Milo Manheim, actress Evanna Lynch and model Alexis Ren.
Bones also shared his appreciation for Burgess on social media with a picture of the two of them following the win.
“Grateful for many things right now,” he wrote.
“Grateful for you that’s seeing this. Grateful for her. Grateful for the experience. Grateful for this mirrorball. And grateful for this picture.”
Burgess and Bones have faced backlash with some fans voicing their displeasure, but the dancer refused to let that taint her day.
“I love the passion our fans have for our show and if anything this shows you just how powerful your vote really is,” she wrote on Twitter.
“However, I don’t appreciate assholes trying to take this moment away from me. So peace out haters.”
Burgess has worked hard to make her way to the top, starting her lengthy career at a young age.
First starting ballet, jazz and gymnastics at age five, her passion and dedication saw her go on to perform at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
In 2006, she toured the world with dancing show Burn The Floor, which sold four million tickets across 160 cities.
She also choreographed Hollywood blockbuster Street Dance 2 3D.
