The iconic Aussie snag will now have onions underneath the sausage to reduce the potential slip hazards.
The national hardware chain recommended this new safety rule that community and charity groups who run the fundraiser sausage sizzles on weekends.
But local resident David Barnhill argued against this change.
“It’s ridiculous, who cares?,” Mr Barnhill questioned.
“I come to Bunnings often and have had plenty of sausages here.
“The fact that onions are on the bottom won’t stop me, that’s the way the world is going unfortunately, soon we’ll have a special holder to eat out of them.”
Wagga apprentice-chef Hannah Newnham thought this change was “ridiculous” and proposed an eating area as a more appropriate alternative.
“It’s un-Australian to put onions on the bottom and it affects the whole experience of the traditional snag,” she said.
“The onions on the top affect the aroma and the lasting palette will be comprised of soggy bread and onion.
“I think it’s all a bit ridiculous and dividing a nation, we’ve got more important things to focus on.”
However, not all opposed the decision.
Wagga parent and regular Bunnings customer Bernard Schiller believed it was a “great idea” and said he might give it a go at home.
“I often come here with my kids and we walk passed the sausages and we usually get one on the way out,” Mr Schiller said.
“I think it’s probably a good idea with kids and not really a topic that you’d think about.
“If the onions are on the bottom, the sausage should hold them better, but people usually put too much sauce on and that usually falls to the ground.”
Mr Schiller argued that it won’t affect the taste at all and said people “won’t even notice”.
Similarly, mother-of-three Kim Zeiher laughed at such a trivial issue, but said she can see why onions are being put on the bottom.
“It seems like such a small thing, but everyone likes their Bunnings sausages don’t they?,” she questioned.
“I have three kids and I actually put the sauce underneath the sausage so the sauce doesn’t spill, and I guess onions can be slippery.
“It’s a bit silly but I come often and I’ll continue to buy if the onions are underneath and I probably won’t even have noticed.”
Bunnings chief operating officer Debbie Poole said the recommendation is provided to community groups within their fundraising sausage sizzle welcome pack.
“Safety is always our number one priority,” Ms Poole said.
“Regardless of how you like your onion and snag, we are confident this new serving suggestions will not impact the delicious taste or great feeling you get when supporting your local community group.” v
