The Cats held off Lake Albert’s challenge with two wickets in hand to remain on top of the ladder at Rawlings Park on Saturday.
Max Harper (3-17) ripped through the Bulls top order as they stumbled to 5-15 before some rearguard action from captain Kurt Robertson (20), Sam Smith (17 not out) and Angus McLay (16) saw the premiers manage 9-101.
It looked like it was going to be a winning score when Harper (26) was removed but Dean Crane (15 not out) and Ben Turner (seven not out) saw the Cats home with a vital 22-run partnership.
On a difficult pitch, one described by captain Josh Thompson as the worst he’d played on in years, the under strength Cats were happy to come away with the win.
“Two of our top five batsmen weren’t playing so we were pretty lucky to get out of jail with that game,” Thompson said.
“We put Max Harper up the order to fill a void and he did an excellent job.”
Turner faced 42 balls for his unbeaten seven and Thompson was impressed with how the teenage wicketkeeper handled the end of the chase.
“It was an very important innings and probably the most important out of everyone,” he said.
“He just blocked out every good ball and every ball that could have been scored off and was really patient.”
It was Lake Albert’s second loss for the weekend after going down to Kooringal Colts in the first of the Friday night Twenty20 matches.
