After three losses from as many Twenty20s, the Saints got the one-day component off to a winning start as the chased down Kooringal Colts total of 206 to win back the Koetz-Jolliffe Cup on Saturday night.
English import Beck Frostick led the way with four wickets then backed it up with the bat.
He top scored with 63.
Captain Ryan Forsyth believes he showed Wagga Sloggers selectors what they missed out on after failing to get a start despite being part of the squad.
“I think Beck justified the reason he should have been in the T20 teams,” Forsyth said.
“He got 40 odd the week before the Regional Big Bash, batted really well and almost won us the game against RSL, and I think we went out there with a little point to prove.
“He was really disappointed he didn’t get a game and get to prove how good he actually is and showed his absolute class in all aspects.
“Hats off to him for bouncing back from what would have been hugely disappointing.”
St Michaels still had plenty to do when Frostick was removed, but newcomer Brendan Gale finished unbeaten on 58 to guide the team home.
Needing 11 off the final over, Saints cashed in with two boundaries to hand Colts a mixed weekend on results.
Kooringal Colts looked to be headed for a massive score before Garness ended a big partnership between Keenan Hanigan (45) and Dave Bolton (102).
From there the Colts crumbled late to be bowled out after 39 overs.
It kept the target much more manageable.
“It was really important as both Keenan and Bolts batted really well,” Forsyth said.
“There wasn’t much in the wicket for the bowlers so we relied heavily on some good fielding and the bowlers to get back to a much straighter and fuller line.”
Gale has come over from Cootamundra with Garness and proved to be pivotal in his first match of the season.
Forsyth could not have been happier with his impact.
“He was terrific,” Forsyth said.
“He was super in the field, just a cool head as well and helped me out a fair bit in the field.
“It was an amazing effort.”
Kooringal just failed to make it two wins for the weekend after taking a six-wicket win over Lake Albert in the first of the six Friday night Twenty20 matches.
With St Michaels set to tackle South Wagga in Friday’s Twenty20 and Wagga City in the one-dayer on Saturday it was a timely victory.
