The Peter Clancy-trained gelding won the event in 2016 but just missed going back-to-back last year when beaten a length by Dyrham Park, trained by Wagga’s Dave Heywood.
Zarreig was handed the topweight of 61kg but gets some relief with apprentice Josh Richards on board and will carry 59kg.
The 10-year-old and Richards are also aiming to make it a feature-race double this spring after claiming the Jerilderie Cup (1400m) six weeks ago.
The six-race card at Berrigan is one of three Southern District meetings on Saturday, with Tumut opening its season and Balranald holding its Spring Cup.
The $10,000 feature (1200m) will see Wagga apprentices Heni Ede (riding Beaujeen for Jerilderie trainer Phil Sweeney) and Stacey Metcalfe (Welsh Poet for Nathan Hobson of Swan Hill) in action.
There are also local meetings at Corowa on Monday and Albury on Tuesday and Thursday next week.
