Oke tipped Stewart to be the standout on Saturday for the weekend’s most prestigious regional cycling event of the year.
“He was a late entry but he’s on a national program and he had two weeks off, so he’s signed up,” Oke said.
“Usually he’s more focused on the road side of things but we’ve got the same prizemoney on offer and I asked whether he’d give it a go.
“He’d be starting from scratch but there should be daylight between him and the rest of the pack.”
Oke was nevertheless disappointed to report a smaller than expected turnout for this year’s event.
“Unfortunately, next weekend there’s a national juniors event next weekend and a talent camp this weekend, so we’ll be missing a bunch of our younger riders,” he said.
“They’re usually the ones to look out for and none of them will be available, so we’re looking at just over 100 entries compared to 180 last year.
“We’ll still have most of the masters riders involved and plenty going on which is good but it’s a shame not to have those younger riders available and racing with us this weekend.”
