The talented all-rounder has made himself available for representative cricket this season and will debut for the Sloggers in this weekend’s Regional Bash tournament in Wagga.
An opening bowler and big-hitting top order batsman, Smeeth’s availability is one of the reasons Wagga are going into the tournament with confidence that they boast one of their strongest representative squads in years.
Smeeth, an Englishman, is looking forward to getting a taste of representative cricket in Wagga.
“I opted not to play last year but with a few more Lake Albert boys in the mix this year I decided to put my hand up. It’s going to be good, I’m looking forward to it,” Smeeth said.
“It will be good fun to mix with the other guys throughout Wagga Cricket as well.”
Wagga Cricket’s opening three rounds have all been Twenty20 fixtures so it has worked well as a lead-up for this weekend’s tournament.
Smeeth is yet to register a big score but has been solid, averaging 16.3 across the first three matches.
He has been very economical with the ball, returning combined figures of 2-35 from nine overs from the three hit-outs.
“I’ve bowled pretty tight without taking a heap of wickets,” he said.
“I’ve felt like I’ve been batting ok without getting a big score.”
Wagga will open their campaign with a night game against arch-rival Border Bullets at Robertson Oval on Saturday night at 7pm.
They will then face Murrumbidgee Rangers and ACT Aces on Sunday.
While Smeeth is yet to hit the representative arena while in the Riverina, the Bullets will not be complete strangers to him.
“I played a couple of games in Albury at the start of last season so I know they have some quality cricketers,” he said.
“We also played a friendly against Lavington so I know it’s a strong competition and they’ll be bringing a strong team across.
“ACT Aces are meant to be really strong as well and be won’t be taking the Rangers for granted either.
“While they will all be quality opposition, we feel we’re in a pretty good spot with our side and we’re pretty confident that we can do well.”
Wagga will announce it’s team to face the Bullets from their original 20-man squad after their final training session on Friday night.
