Students at Kooringal held a BBQ at the end of last term and raised $1300 for drought relief which will be distributed to needy farmers in the region by the CWA Riverina Group.
CWA Riverina’s agriculture and environment officer Barbara Johnson said the group plays a vital role in distributing funds for utility or household accounts.
“We play a very important role because the drought at the moment is rather devastating and the funds can help with the farmers’ electricity and phone bills, as well as medical expenses,” Ms Johnson said.
Ms Johnson said the CWA have received about $5.5 million in donations to the disaster relief fund, with majority of the money being dedicated to the drought relief.
CWA have distributed about $2.5 million to 1500 drought-affected families, equating to about 300,000 families per week.
Kooringal’s agriculture teacher Stephen Reynolds grew up in a farming family and said the money raised will offer emotional support as well as financial relief.
“Droughts can affect the mind just as much as financially, because everyday farmers have to wake up and they’ve got starving stock, or their crops aren’t producing and that becomes a big burden,” Mr Reynolds said.
