“Bridges symbolise the mental health gap,” said event organiser Nicole Craig.
“Walking over the bridge is a step by step process. That’s the way it works with mental health too, just taking it all one step at a time.
“In Sydney, they walk over the harbour bridge. The lagoon bridge will be our harbour bridge for a day.”
This is the fourth time the Wellness Walk has operated in Wagga, following the national event that is now in its sixth year.
Coinciding with the national month of mental health awareness, the October event will host a showcase of various health services from around the city and state.
But, in the lead up Wagga’s Sunflower House is still searching for an additional 20 volunteers.
“Depression, or the ‘black dog’, and anxiety are becoming less stigmatised,” said Ms Craig.
“There’s more room for us to discuss them openly.
“Our goal is to see all facets of mental health receive that kind of awareness, to see fear of mental health problems replaced by understanding.”
