This year the show is a bit different as it highlights the importance of Australia’s agriculture currently facing the drought. 

The team comprises of a close knit ‘family’ of students from year 4 to 12. 

Coming from a farming background, year 11 student Josephine Cox said this is her second year competing at one of the country’s most prestigious agricultural shows. 

“It was amazing, I loved it. The people there are supportive, even if you didn’t do well in the ring they still show their support and encouragement,” she said. 

“I love farming because you can connect with animals and people that have the same interest.

“This year we’re taking more steers and students to the show, so our team has increased from last year to  nine steers with 18 students.” 

For year 8 student Josh Miller, 14, having control over the cow is one of his favourite elements of the show. 

“I like the connection between you and the cow, because you’re actually leading the cow around and you have to command the cow and it listens to you,” he said. 

Months of preparing the cattle will be tested under the guidance of experienced staff, with the students taking responsibility to ensure the cattle are ready for showing. 

David Crick, teacher and Cattle Team leader, said the team allows students to work collaboratively with a common interest. 

“I get a thrill to see the growth in students as they experience success resulting from their hard work and connections, both with each other and the animals they are caring for,” he said.

Wagga Christian College is the only school from Wagga heading to the RMS, but will compete against two other schools from the Riverina.
