Despite the lack of rain, Wagga grain grower Simon Moloney said they are faring well compared to others and he is grateful for that.  

“I have been for a drive over the weekend, up to Orange and back, and I don’t think we have much to complain about,” he said. 

​Half of Mr Moloney’s property north-east of Wagga is canola. 

“Our crops are going all right, they are hanging in,” he said.

“We need rain to finish the canola off, but we are not sweating it just yet.” 

Mr Moloney said he doesn’t have to drive far north to hear discussions about cutting crops for hay.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “We are just under half our average rainfall for the year, so we are going to need something.” 

Mr Moloney said the last bit of rain was enough to keep them going for now.

“We had 22mm,” he said. “That was a real lifeline for us, if we didn’t get that we would have been discussing hay options.” 

Canola fields are becoming a popular photo opportunity for social media, but Mr Moloney hasn’t had any issues with eager tourists. 

“It is a cool shot though,” he said. “It’s not why we do it, but it does look cool.”
