As spring has sprung, the magpies will soon be a-swooping across the Riverina.
While there are no recorded attacks in Wagga on the MagpieAlert tracking map, there are growing numbers of incidents across NSW.
The NSW Government’s office of Environment and Heritage offers the following advice people can take and should teach children.
Firstly do not provoke the birds and hold an umbrella or stick above your head to deter swooping.
Keep eye contact, as they are less likely to swoop if you look at them and hurry past the nesting sites.
For those riding a bike, dismount to avoid falling off and move away and warn others about bird territories.
Magpies are a protected species and anyone concerned about overly defensive birds are advised to contact council's environmental sustainability and regulatory services directorate.
