Excavation work for stage three of the $431 hospital redevelopment project is due to be completed this month and the main works due to begin early next year.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard on Tuesday unveiled plans for stage three, as well as images showing a proposed 800-space free multi-storey car park.
The new car park will be built on land fronting Edward Street that is currently partially used for car parking, as well as temporary buildings during the redevelopment.
Mr Hazzard said the new car park, along with other parking areas, should meet the hospital’s parking needs until 2031
Jill Ludford, the chief executive of the Murrumbidgee Local Health Service, said the car park was still in the planning stage, but would be delivered as part of stage three.
Mr Hazzard batted away suggestions that the announcement of the car park was linked to campaigning in the Wagga byelection.
He said residents and staff had previously spoken to him about the difficulties of parking around the hospital precinct.
The Minister said it made economic sense to build the car park straight after work was completed on stage three.
