Oz Comic-Con is back in Sydney Sept 29-30, at the International Convention Centre and to celebrate we’re giving away five double passes.
Marcelo Baez, a prominent comic illustrators and a guest panelist, said the Sydney Oz Comic-Con is one of those events that has changed how ‘geeky’ is defined.
“The great thing is being able to hang out with friends and meet new people that love the same thing,” he said.
“When I grew up, being a geek wasn't accessible, but it’s almost cool now.
“It's fantastic, because it’s all about stories and characters and people loving them and uniting because of these stories.”
Baez said he had always wanted to draw for comic books, but never knew how to get into the industry.
“I studied graphic design when I left school, because I thought it was the only way I could make money doing something close to what I enjoyed,” he said.
“I decided to publish my own comic book in the late 90s.
“The big shift was getting noticed by a US agency that looks for work for you in the industry.”
Fast forward a few years and Baez has worked for international labels including Marvel, Time Inc, GQ Australia and ESPN Magazine.
“I'm still doing a bit of graphic design,” he said.
“As a freelancer you might get a long term project that lasts three or four months, but normally projects last three to four weeks.”
Baez said one of the most common questions he gets is ‘how you do draw so well?’.
“People think there is a secret answer,” he said.
“You just have to work at it. I was very determined.
“You have to push at what you want, if you have a bit of talent you need to be tough with yourself and make the time to be better.”
Another common question is who would win in a fight between Hulk and Superman? Baez’s bet is with the Hulk.
Jono Whyman, event manager of ReedPOP said this is the biggest Oz Comic-Con to hit Sydney.
“We’re proud to be supporting great, local Sydney based businesses and talent at this year’s expo and in Artist Alley, “ he said.
“It’s going to be an awesome showcase of all things pop-culture, from original and fan art, to comic books, art prints, novels, jewellery, clothing and homewares.
“ If you’re looking to buy the next closest thing to Thor’s mighty hammer, this is where you’ll find it!”.
We’re giving five Wagga geeks the chance to win a double pass to the weekend’s activities.
