A day after MPs paid their respects to former Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp, they acknowledged Mr Fife’s years of service.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said it was Mr Fife’s service to Wagga and “dedication to conquering the tyranny of distance and delivering tertiary education in regional NSW, that Mr Fife may be remembered for most”.
Mr Fife died in November 2017 at the age of 88, just days before Joe Schipp, his long-time friend and a fellow former Member for Wagga.
“First elected in 1957, Wal Fife would serve 18 years as the Member for Wagga, 10 years as a minister in the State Government before being elected as the Federal Member for Farrer and then Hume, serving a further 18 years in Federal Parliament, six years as a Minister,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“Together with his close friend and successor as Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp, Mr Fife dedicated himself to establishment of Charles Sturt University, now one of our State’s finest educational institutions.
“CSU remains a credit to Mr Fife and Mr Schipp’s tireless advocacy and determination on behalf of Wagga and regional NSW more broadly.”
