A sprinkling of sky water couldn’t stop the Riverina’s sportsmen and sportswomen from strutting their stuff in an action-packed Saturday and those who braved the elements were treated to some of the best footy (pick your code) going around.
Shocking conditions turned Jarrah Sportsground into a mud field for the Southern Inland preliminary finals, but even that couldn’t halt Ag College’s dramatic finish against defending premiers Leeton.
Mike van Diggelen scored late to stun the Phantoms in Tumut and secure Aggies’ first grand final berth since 2012 – check out Courtney Rees’ additional coverage here – while Griffith edged Waratahs in the women’s preliminary final.
It was no less dramatic over in the Riverina League with 2017 grand finalists Collingullie-Glenfield Park going down to undefeated Griffith in a two-point thriller at Crossroads Oval.
The Swans wrapped up this year’s minor premiership with a gripping 7.8 (50) to 7.6 (48) win and are now one step closer to posting an undefeated home and away season.
MCUE were Saturday’s other big winners after beating Turvey Park by 30 points while East Wagga-Kooringal took the Bushpigs down a peg in their Farrer League clash.
Finally, Group Nine almost had its biggest boilover of the year when Ben Jeffrey’s Kangaroos showed some grit against an injury-ravaged Brothers outfit.
The Kangaroos pressed hard but Terry Westblade’s men pressed harder to ice their finals berth with a 24-22 win.
