The Goannas bounced back from consecutive losses by outlasting the Hoppers in a slog, 6.6 (42) to 3.11 (29) at Mangoplah Sportsground.
MCUE coach Travis Cohalan was happy to see a response from his playing group.
“We spoke before the game about getting back to playing with enthusiasm and with pride in the jumper and I thought for the majority of the game we were able to do that,” Cohalan said.
“For the first three quarters our pressure was fantastic and that’s when we play our best footy. We haven’t been able to do that for the last month, for whatever reason, and that was the most pleasing part.”
Ryan Price kicked three of MCUE’s six goals, while Andrew Dickins in the ruck and defenders Matt Collins, Paddy Griffin and Connor Griffin all shone.
Wes Clark and Dave Barron both made their debut for the Goannas.
Coolamon lost Jamie Maddox to a broken hand early in the contest.
Marshal Macauley was clearly the Hoppers’ best, while Connor Neyland and Mitch McKelvie both played well also.
